Traffic Tickets In Williamsburg

Is excessive Traffic Enforcement Hurting Williamsburg Tourism
“at a Time When we need the Tourist the most”?

I have noticed a lot of traffic tickets being written in the Williamsburg area lately. Now I must admit that I recently was the recipient of one of these tickets for speeding on Centerville Road. I am normally one that tries to obey the law and I try to teach my family to do so also. For some reason that particular morning I just wasn’t paying close enough attention to my speed and although I know that for most of my trip I was at or below the speed limit for that instance I exceeded the speed limit.  The officer was a Virginia State Trooper in a grey unmarked Chevrolet Impala. He was all business and in fact seemed to be relishing in the fact that he was going to make his superiors happy that he was out bringing in revenue for the county and state. But was he really?

It’s no secret that Tourism in the Williamsburg area is down substantially.  The money collected by the state (I paid it to James City County so I am not sure how the revenue from the violations is broken down) only goes to the respective coffers of whatever agency. Now let’s say that money (the fine was $169) was spent by the citizen or a Tourist out in our community.  That same $169 would pass through the hands of several businesses, employees and of course the various government agencies would have collected their fair share. That same $169 would have helped one or more of our local businesses survive in these difficult times, It would have helped provide employment to our local citizens helping to keep them off of the Unemployment rolls and the Welfare rolls, It would have supported the locality, the state, and the federal government and would have been recycled through earnings and wages several times throughout our community. Think about it, I spend $169.00 at a local business. That business pays its bills (some to other local businesses, to employees and of course profits are spent at local businesses. All these people now spend their share of the $169.00 in the community and so on and so on. What keeps this money from virtually recycling itself indefinitely throughout the community? The Government – that’s who! The government siphons money from the citizens and is the biggest culprit in stifling economic growth. Less government equals less growth it’s a fact that is plain and simple. Instead this Virginia State Trooper did the opposite – He helped kill our economy. That’s right through no fault of his own and by just doing his job he is guilty of Murdering the Local Economy! Now those are bold words but they are 100% true!

So far we haven’t addressed the negative impact on our Tourism.  Now I don’t know how many Tourists are given tickets during their visit here and really it doesn’t matter. The ones that are it most certainly ruins their trip here and the ones that witness the strict enforcement will look at the Williamsburg area as nothing more than a “Speed Trap”. I can’t speak for them but I try my best to avoid areas that are nothing more than “Speed Traps”. In fact this summer I went to visit my sister who lives outside of Memphis, Tennessee in a small town called Munford, Tennessee. She warned me that we would have to pass through Millington, Tennessee, a small town that has a small Naval Base in it and that is now a notorious “Speed Trap”.  Sure enough in the couple of mile of the stretch of the Highway we witnessed three cars pulled over by the local police. We avoided the area at all costs the remainder of our trip refusing to go anywhere near the town or its local businesses.  This is what happens to areas that try to take revenue from the likes of its citizens in this manner. They end up killing the businesses and livelihoods of its citizens.

For those that doubt me there is a road in Williamsburg, 60 Bypass that in one are the speed limit is 25 miles per hour. Travel the road in the opposite direction and it has a speed limit of 35 miles per hour! In this writers opinion - meant for nothing more but to confuse and trap unsuspecting individuals into the government money trap!
